On April 26th 1913 Birmingham City beat Grimsby Town 2-1, watched by a crowd of 3,000. It was the final game of the season and Blues were 3rd in League 2, the equivalent of the Championship today. We might not equal that result today but we should get a bigger crowd.
This day was also the last game of our season in 1965. Blues, who were bottom of League 1, played Leeds, who were top before that game. Blues scored 3 goals (on 5, 49 and 51 minutes) and then Leeds scored 3 (70, 80 and 90 minutes) so it ended in a draw. Leeds ended the season equal on points with Manchester United but with an inferior goal average so they just missed out on the title.
In 1995 Blues played Brentford just three days after winning the Auto Windscreens Final at Wembley. The game was a promotion decider, there was a crowd of 25,081 and Blues won 2-0. That season, like this one, ended with 3 home games followed by an away game. The Brentford game was the first of the 3 home games and it was followed by a 3-3 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion on April 29th and a 0-0 draw with Bradford City on May 2nd. On May 6th, Blues won their final game at Huddersfield 2-1 and were promoted.
And today? Will it be the day we’ve waited for — the day we get a home win? I can’t help hoping. Also hope that tomorrow goes well for Birmingham City Ladies, playing in Sweden for a place in the Champions League Final.
