There are three important games for Birmingham City this weekend. The first kicks off at 2 pm today, at Solihull Moors Autotech Stadium, as Birmingham City Ladies play Tyreso1 in the first leg of the UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final. They have done well to get this far as they have never reached this stage of the competition before. It would be a fantastic achievement if they could get through to the final in Lisbon. I hope they get a good crowd to support them.
I will be at the men’s game in Nottingham, which is important for the opposite reason to the ladies’ game. The ladies are trying to do better than they have ever done before; the men are trying to avoid sinking lower than they have been for some time. The 1994-5 season was the last time Blues were in the third tier. There are very few points separating the bottom teams and Blues are only three points above the relegation zone. We need a win against Nottingham Forrest as the next three games after that are home game and we have an abysmal record at home.
The third game of this extended holiday weekend is on Monday, at home to Blackburn. I won’t attempt to predict the result of that. I will be there, as usual, hoping for the best but fearing the worst.
I’m also not going to make any predictions about the possible sale of the club and who might buy it. I’ll just wait and see what happens. There’s nothing Blues fans can do to make BIHL sell the club quickly but I do believe we can help it appear more attractive to potential buyers.
Any sensible person would examine a company’s assets before putting in a bid to buy it and I would like the next owner(s) to be sensible. I would also like him/them to know something about the football business and to care about the long term future of the club. That kind of owner would know that a club’s supporters are a very important asset; any evidence that supporters still care about the club would make it a better buy. I believe we can show we care by going to games and supporting the team and also by completing the survey2 on ownership and community shares that Blues Trust has produced. That’s why I’ll be giving out copies of the survey before the game today and on Monday. If you see me, stop and say hello. If you would like to help distribute surveys on Monday, email me at email@example.com
