There’s a difference between hopes and expectations. Unfulfilled hopes can leave us disappointed but unmet expectations can make us angry. A sense of entitlement often accompanies expectations; if I think I have a right to expect my team to play well I’ll feel entitled to be angry if they don’t. When I go to Birmingham City games I try not to expect too much. Having high hopes and low expectations helps me to cope with all the ups and downs of supporting the Blues.
But last week’s game against Cardiff has left even me expecting to see my team put in a decent performance when I go to the Den this afternoon. At that game they showed commitment and effort, which is what I want from the players. It would be good to get a result today but as long as they look like they want to win, I’ll be satisfied.
