Gambling is not a problem if you can afford to lose.  Spending a lot of money on one player like John Terry is a big gamble. It could lead to promotion but it might not. 

Of course, there is risk in all signings.  A club seeking to build for the future can sign a good young player for a modest fee and have it not work out. A player can get injured, arrested or just not fit into the team.  My preference would always be to spread the risk by spending whatever money is available on several players rather than just one and to look for players who have the potential to play for several seasons.

So, my reaction to yesterday’s big signing was relief not disappointment.

    Agreed. And my guess is he will be ok with 2 games a week until xmas but if he picks up a knock he may struggle. Which will be great for us
