The Telegraph put the 2011 final first when they ranked and rated League Cup finals since 1996. It said, “Relegation from the Premier League later that year inflicted lasting damage on Birmingham City, but there is more to football than merely surviving in the top division. The cost of relegation was huge, but the memories of that stunning day at Wembley are priceless.” Priceless indeed! I’ve just watched video highlights of the game and am still smiling.
In football, anything can happen; we need to enjoy the good times when they come because there is no telling how long they will last. And it’s a good time for Birmingham City now as our team has a chance of making the playoffs. But the ownership situation is unresolved and who knows what will happen next season? Five years ago, Carson Yeung celebrated his birthday at Wembley. A year ago he was in prison. This year he is out on bail awaiting the result of his appeal to the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal. And I have no idea what could happen if he wins that appeal.
So, my advice to the fans traveling down to London for the QPR match is, enjoy the day. I hope it will bring a win and some good memories. Tuesday night brought a win and a good goal. I’m going to do my best to hang on to the memory of that goal and forget about the misplaced passes and how cold it was.
